It's pretty easy to just pop in a resource pack of the old textures and be done with it. But like, even then, it's not like you have to use the new textures if you don't like them. The only real point I can see against this change is that Minecraft has existed for 10 years with the old textures, so it's really weird to be updating them now. I would be very surprised if people would think of that as an upgrade. To put it another way, imagine if these were the textures the game originally launched with, and then they updated the game to have the old textures. Yeah, some of them are a bit blurry and I'm not a fan of several of the new items, but overall, I would consider it a net improvement. I've orbited around several pixel art communities for quite a while, and whenever Minecraft's visuals are brought up in those places, it's always in a negative light.Ī lot of the new textures are pretty much objectively better. Literally any pixel artist can tell you that all the items and most of the blocks in Minecraft look utterly abysmal.

It's very, very easy to tell that Shovel Knight's spritework was done by someone who actually knows how to sprite, whereas Minecraft's older spritework was not. The difference between Minecraft and Shovel Knight is that Shovel Knight actually has competent spritework with good use of color and aesthetic, whereas most of the blocks in Minecraft look almost objectively horrible. Minecraft's spritework is really fucking shitty, as a whole. Building for me has been so much more enjoyable with the new stuff. You may not like the new textures from a personal preference point of view, but I can say that from a technical pixel art point of view he has definitely "fixed" them.Īs a personal sidenote, most players I know that had a problem with them now can't go back to the original ones. I'm sure if he could make his own texture pack based on his own ideas, colors and aesthetic it would be thousand times better than the final product we are looking at in 1.14. Sure, you might be able to improve it from a technical point of view, but the final product isn't really yours -it doesn't have your artistic sensibilities and soul. It's like if someone drew something and asked you to improve it. He has to stay faithful to the original textures and color palettes while at the same time making it "better". I can tell you this with certainty, coming from someone who's done pixel art as a hobby for the past 4 years or so, his job is extremely difficult to do. (OPs post might be kind of referring to these older new textures, as many people haven't gotten to see the latest versions.)Īll in all the new textures are kind of a change in style, and when changing something as old and important in a game as popular as this backlash is kind of to be expected though, especially so when a lot of textures feel like change for the sole purpose of change to people instead of like improvements. Looking through the latest new textures they are also a lot better than the early new textures, which were super blurry and a lot less polished. Most of the new changes feel fine to me, more contrast/less detail isn't necessarily better and changes are definitely improvements in the majority of cases. The new apple also looks so spotty instead of smooth like a real apple. Leaves, logs and planks all just look blurrier to me but this is not the case with almost all the other textures. The new texture for the side has grey spots instead of black, and the top/bottom texture has less pronounced tree rings. Some of the new textures definitely come of as less contrast-y to me.
